The patina process involves applying nitrates of various metals to a hot surface.  Iron nitrates give you browns and golds.  Copper nitrates give you blues and greens.  Silver nitrates give you blacks and silvers.  We also use liver of sulfur to give blacks and several other chemicals to give more exotic colors.  The colors look very different depending on whether the surface is polished or sandblasted.
