We
sand cast elements of many of our sculptures. Some examples are the
bottoms of our larger vessels such as the "Crab Bowl", top of the
"Tall Iguana Bowl" and the legs for the "Crow Table". A wood pattern
is needed for each piece. The legs of the "Crow Table" are actual
branches of trees and the patterns for the round forms are turned on a wood
lathe. These patterns are used to create two part molds of bonded
sand. Bronze ingot is melted in a furnace and poured into the molds.
The "Silver Suit" is worn for protection from splashing bronze. The
castings that come out of this process require quite a lot of grinding and
polishing as the sand surface is never as smooth as a wax surface.
The bowl on the top of this vessel and the ball are sand cast from wood
patterns created on a lathe.
