The
following pictures show the shell casting process of the five new small
sculptures we completed last fall. Each wax model of the small
sculpture is attached to a central sprue of wax with gating running to areas
that need extra feeding of the molten bronze. Pictured below is the
ceramic shell that is built up in layers over the wax "tree". Most of
the trees below hold 4 to 8 sculptures. The ceramic shell is dried and
then fired and while still hot, molten bronze is poured into the mold. After
the bronze cools the shell molds are removed from the sand pit, the shell is broken and sand blasted off
the small bronze sculptures.
