We vacuum cast the small details for our
sculptures and fountains. A wax is needed for each element and many
are cast together on a wax tree by the same method jewelers use. We
use rubber molds to create the waxes, just as in shell casting.
The wax tree is put in a metal flask and filled with a plaster investment
material. The wax is melted out and the investment is heated before
the flask is placed on a table that draws a vacuum on the flask to help pull
the molten bronze into the tiniest areas.
Wax sticks which
will be used on the Sandpiper cabinet door and for teapot handles.
These are five "trees" of small elements we
recently vacuum cast. They are details for our "Moon Sculpture",
"Toucan Cabinet" and many other sculptures and fountains we are building.
